Group Delta Consultants has provided geotechnical design and construction phase services to colleges and universities for projects ranging from new buildings/facilities, parking structures, and access roads. Our services typically include geotechnical recommendations for site development, evaluation of alternative foundation types, evaluation of slopes for temporary excavations, a geologic and seismic hazard evaluation in accordance with the 2010 California Building Code (CBC), Title 24 of the CCR and CDMG Note 48, including discussion of the historical seismicity of the area; surface fault rupture potential; anticipated ground accelerations, analysis of the seismic ground motion for the site in accordance with the 2007 CBC/ASCE 7-05; the potential for liquefaction or any other secondary seismic effects, and the potential for any other geologic or seismic hazards to affect the sites.

Pierce College Maintenance & Operations Complex

San Diego City College Math and Social Sciences Building

Project Description:

Group Delta is providing geotechnical consulting and materials testing and special inspection services for the 5 story, 73,000 square foot, Math and Social Sciences Building containing classrooms, a health center, a corporate education center and associated support space along with a 7 tier, 400-car, parking garage currently under construction.

Our work includes providing special inspection and testing services for all of the reinforcing steel (including headed rebar), reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, structural steel, high-strength bolts, shop and field welding, masonry, anchors, and fire proofing. Group Delta provided geotechnical parameters for foundation design including 149 caissons ranging from 2 feet to 6 feet in diameter and up to 90 feet in length.

SDSU Aztec Student Union

West LA Community College Parking Structure

Project Description:

Construction of the new Aztec Student Union building began with the demolition of the existing Aztec Center in June (video of roof demolition). This demolition will be followed by construction of a new 3-story steel-framed structure with a partial basement.  The Aztec Student Union is designed to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified, USGBC’s highest rating for green buildings. This would make the Aztec Student Union the only LEED Platinum student union in the entire California state university system. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2013.

Site development will include relocation of existing storm drain, sewer and water utilities, and the construction of various new underground utilities and basement retaining walls.  Aztec Circle Drive will be expanded and lowered along the eastern edge of the site in order to provide direct access for delivery trucks to the basement of the structure.

Group Delta's Role:

  • Provided structural foundation design recommendations
  • Developed infill specifications for abandoning basement with shared wall not designed as a retaining structure
  • Providing on-going consultation and materials testing services during construction
  • Provided recommendations for the utilization of lightweight cellcrete adjacent to the existing MTS Trolley alignment

Western University of Health Sciences
Health Education Center

Project Description:

  • New 5-story 185,000 square feet steel frame medical school building addition on a 2-acre lot in Pomona

Group Delta's Role:

  • Design Level Geotechnical Investigation
  • Geologic and Seismic Recommendations
  • Construction Phase observations of of shoring installation, foundation overexcavation, subgrade preparation, utility trench excavation and backfill, and pavement base preparation
  • Materials laboratory testing and field inspection of: Fireproofing, foundation-slab-structural concrete, shotcrete, concrete bolts, CMU walls, Reinforcing steel, Structural Steel, Field and Shop welding, High Strength Bolting, Shop and Field Non-Destructive Testing, Drilled In Anchors and Dowels, Compression and Tensile testing of concrete and steel materials

Harbor College Learning Resource Center/Library

Project Description:

  • New library and learning resource center is planned at the location of the existing Business building
  • Overall dimensions of the new library and learning resource center are about 135 ft X 240 ft.
  • The new building will be a two-story slab-on-grade structure
